A two-storey farmhouse at the edge of a remnant apple orchard. A deep front porch shades the ground floor, and a single hearth anchors the east end.

The brief

The owners wanted a working farmhouse, not a period piece: room for family to stay, a mudroom that could take orchard boots, and a porch wide enough to eat on through a Hood River summer.

The site

The lot sits at the edge of an old apple orchard, open to the wind that runs up the Gorge from the west. The house turns its long front to the trees and puts the low wing on the windward end.

Design notes

Front elevation of Orchard Lane House: a two-storey farmhouse with sage board-and-batten siding, a metal roof, a front gable and a deep porch, drawn in pencil and coloured in.
  • 01

    Porch

An eight-foot porch runs the full front. It shades the ground-floor glass in summer and keeps rain off the door in winter.

  • 02

    Roof

Standing-seam metal over a plain gable, with a centre gable that marks the stair and the main bedroom above it.

  • 03

    Hearth

One masonry chimney at the east end. Kitchen and living room share it, so the ground floor reads as one room with two halves.

  • 04

    Materials

Sage board-and-batten, painted trim and a single wood door. Three materials, carried all the way round.
